The nightlife is also a big attraction here and you'll enjoy viewing the harbor at night and surrounding countryside. Shopping is big in Charlotte Amalie and tourists from the Cruise Ships are drawn like magnets to find unique Caribbean art items and electronic merchandise because it is duty free.

Historic Charlotte Amalie's attractions include Fort Christian located right on the waterfront. This 330 year old brick fortress was building by the Danish who once owned St. Thomas before it was sold to the US in 1917. The fort has a small museum which highlights St Thomas' past. Kids can go inside the jail cells and climb stairs and just get a real feel for what life was like centuries ago in the Caribbean.

Bluebeard's Castle and Blackbeard's Castle are two fortresses built years ago by the Danes. They got their names from the pirates that used the stone towers as lookouts. They would lie in waiting for passing ships and launch an attack. Blackbeard's castle is at the top of Government Hill. Both castles have accommodations.

If you're looking for some exercise, an old staircase called 99 steps leads up the hillside for a great view of the town. At the top of the steps you'll find Government House and the old Bluebeard's Castle Tower, which is now a great St Thomas Hotel. Seven Arches museum has artwork depicting life in past centuries and it's all inside an old West Indian style house.

The St Thomas Sky Ride or Paradise Point Tram way is well worth the visit. You can ride a cable car to the top of a 700 foot hill for some great views. You'll find some fun activities and a restaurant at the top and there's a hiking trail too.

If you like aquariums, you won't be disappointed with Coral World on St Thomas. Here you can get close to local marine life including sharks, sear turtles, stingrays, crabs, and sea anemones. There is an opportunity for you (called SeaTrekkin) to wear a special helmet and actually go under the water much like a scuba diver can. You walk on the bottom of the aquarium tank guided by a railing to get a real undersea experience. Coral World is good fun for both adults and kids.

Carnival is the island's big cultural event. It happens in April and is a celebration of life in the Caribbean.
