Many real estate investors are buying condos, land and houses to rent them as vacation rentals.

More than 51,000 people call St Thomas their home. The island has a rich history steeped in pirate lore. Once home to the Ciboney, Taino, Arawak and the Carib native tribes, the islands were settled by Europeans in the early 1500's not long after Christopher Columbus passed by the island. Disease from the Europeans nearly wiped out the native populations along with raids from Spaniards, and exodus to other islands. Pirates hid in the coves and bays of the islands using them as a port to attach passing ships, mostly those of Spain carrying gold and other valuables. St Thomas was first settled in the late 1600s by the Danish.

St Thomas's agrarian past is dominated by the farming of sugar cane. Originally, convicted criminals were used for workers at the various sugar cane plantations. They were not very productive unfortunately, and slaves were brought in from Africa to put to work. The early 1700s saw boom times for St Thomas as the sugar cane was a profitable crop.

The United States and Denmark had initiated talks to buy the island several times between 1865 and 1917. The US wanted to avoid having the Virgin islands fall into the hands of Nazi Germany and the final deal was struck and the United States bought the Danish West Indies for $25 million.

After the second world war, tourism via plane and ship stimulated growth in Charlotte Amalie and the port became the leading port of the West Indies. There are many sites to see in Charlotte Amalie. You should visit the Paradise Skyway where you ascend a 700 high mountain for great views of the islands and the St Thomas harbor. The Atlantis Submarine tour ventures underwater for great sealife scenery along a reef. Coral World Ocean Park is a five acre eco-theme park having aquariums, outdoor pools, nature trails, and an underwater observatory. Additional activities include Sea Trek Helmet Dive which allows you to walk underwater, Swim with the Sharks program, parasailing, and a semi-submarine ride.

Bluebeards Tower is one of two stone towers in the Charlotte Amalie Harbor. It was built originally by the Danes in 1689 as a watchtower to aid the defense of Fort Christian which you can visit during your visit. The tower is incorporated into the Bluebeards Castle Hotel.

Mountain Top is the highest point (1542 feet) on St Thomas at the summit of St Peter Mountain. Mountain Top, also known as signal hill was used as a communications location by the US military during the 1940's. Besides the incredible scenery, you can enjoy shopping, dining and a drink.

Frenchtown is considered the nicest area of Charlotte Amalie and has plenty of restaurants and bars for the tourists. It was settled in the late 1800's by Frenchmen from the nearby island of St. Barthelemy. Many of them were fishermen who spoke Creole.

Red Hook is a village on the east end of the island serving the port where ferries take passengers to the the Island of St John Virgin Islands. Although many stores cater to the boating community there are plenty of restaurants, shops, grocery stores, pharmacies, and gift shops. There are several beautiful beaches and resort villas nearby.
