The US Virgin Island of
St Croix is 40 miles south of St Thomas and has a
population of more than 60,000.
St Croix Virgin Island
has long been a quiet agrarian based locale, yet is
seeing considerable growth in population and economic
activity. It offers several golf courses some of which
host professional golf tournaments. The island is full
of beautiful beaches, rolling hills, pastures and even
has a small rainforest. It also has miles of condos and
has its own airport along with a major oil refinery. The
deluxe hotel resorts are on the North Shore of the
island.
The major city on St
Croix is Christiansted, rich in Caribbean history and
offering quaint inns and villas along with 18th and 19th
century buildings. The only lighthouse, built in the
late 1800s, overlooks the port from the cliffs of Ham's
Bluff. The other town located on the west side of the
island is Frederiksted. It offers the central historic
district, and the Federiksted Pier.
Sites to see in St. Croix include
the town of Christiansted, Point Udall, Sunny Isle,
Cruzan Rum Distillery, St. George Village Botanical
Garden, Whim Plantation Museum, Frederiksted, Scenic
Road and the Salt River Bay National Historic Park and &
Ecological Preserve. Some of the more notable
restaurants
on St Croix are Le St. Tropez, Blue Moon, The Sunset
Grill, Off the Wall, Breezes, Cafe Christine,
Kendrick's, Restaurant Bacchus, Rum Runners, and Savant.
The Buccaneer Hotel is the major resort hotel located in
Christiansted offering its own
golf course.
Christopher Columbus
named the island Santa Cruz and landed here in 1493. He
was driven off by the aggressive Carib Indians.
