  USVI Government Offices

The US Virgin Islands is an unincorporated territory of the USA. It was purchased by the US in 1917.

The people of the USVI send an elected, non voting representative to Washington DC, but they cannot vote in the Senate, unless they actually live in one of the other 50 US states. The USVI elect a territorial governor every four years in addition to 15 senators every two years. The government office is located in Charlotte Amalie at the Legislature building.

Democrats and Republicans exist in almost equal numbers and there two other political parties.

US law is used as the basis of law in the USVI and judges are appointed by the Governor. The US District Court is responsible for federal issues.

Visit www.ltg.gov.vi for more information on starting a business in the US Virgin Islands, immigration issues and applying for passports, real estate and property assessment matters, education, police and the port authority.

The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States.  In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future. In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines.
