  Local Food and Culture

An interesting blend of American, Caribbean and West Indian cultures has created some very unique foods and tastes that you can sample at St. Thomas Restaurants. From basic diet staples to fine cuisine to local drinks, the people of the Virgin Islands aren't afraid to mix a little of this with a little of that to create an interesting range of tastes.

Of course, this is the Caribbean and the Virgin Islands are considered the best area for fishing and you'll be able to enjoy some exotic seafoods.

The great restaurant chefs know just how to prepare and serve some tasty seafood dinners you won't find anywhere else. Carnival in the spring is a good time to sample the food and culture because that's when it's all brought out to enjoy. However, this is a tourist area and it's available for your enjoyment anytime of the year. There are small restaurants tucked away around the islands that offer plenty of different menus and preparations.

These are just a few of the tasty foods you'll be being enjoying whether you live or vacation in the US Virgin Islands :

Conch Fritters are a much prized delicacy drawn from the Conch seashell. They're typically served as entrees. Conch Fritters are deep fried with any variety of spices to make a delicate morsel covered with a breaded, crunchy batter.

Caribbean Lobsters are somewhat smaller than those found in North Atlantic waters but they have a unique taste you will want to try. Some lobster dishes may come stuffed with Crab meat.

Caribbean Pates are made with lobster, conch, chicken or beef fillings. These light snacks are deep fried.

Fungi is made with cornmeal and an okra side dish that is added to fish dinners.

Johnny Cake is a common item on Caribbean dinner menus. They are deep fried biscuits, better eaten when warm, but many Virgin Islanders eat them cold for lunch.

Virgin Island Tarts are a very sweet, single crust pie filled with coconut, guava or other fruits.

Goatwater is a stew made from goat meat and includes onions, garlic, tomatoes, and spices.

Ole Wife is a dish that has triggerfish or moonfish in it and it's boiled with onions and spices.

Maubi is a spicy drink fermented from maubi bark, sugar, orange peelings, cinnamon and cloves and is on the menus of local restaurants. Seamoss, another popular drink is made with boiled seaweed. After the seaweed dissolves, it is mixed with milk and spices. Other tropical Caribbean drinks you can ask for may include: passionfruit juice, pumpkin punch, banana punch, coconut water, peanut punch, bush tea and lemon tea.

Rum has a long history in the Caribbean and every Caribbean Island has or once had, its own distillery. Rum is made from sugar cane or molasses and it is perhaps the most common alcoholic drink for tourists.
