The Virgin Islands are what most scuba divers and snorkellers dream of. For reef divers or deep sea divers there are ship wrecks galore and other spectacular dive sites to visit. An incredible diversity of tropical fish await in the warm waters of St John, St Croix and St Thomas. The underwater reefs here offer endless opportunities for exploration for both beginning and experienced divers.
Buck Island Reef National Monument just off of St Croix, is a protected marine region where charter boats bring scuba divers. Also in St Croix is the The Wall, an area that has a collection of sponges and coral offering a challenge to divers of all skill levels.
In St Thomas divers can visit an old World War II wreck named the Shoal II. It is coral encrusted and loaded with tropical fish. Another St Thomas dive site is the Wreck of the General Rogers, a 120 foot Coast Guard Boat where divers see sponges, coral, and even barracuda.
In St John, the Carval Rock beckons divers with its 80 foot depths of brilliant coral rock.
Numerous dive tour operators and equipment outfitters are available here either privately or through a dive package offered by the big resorts. You can also dive as part of a charter cruise in St Thomas. It's a great way to experience the beauty of St Thomas and the rest of the Caribbean. |
