Commemorating the freeing
of the slaves in 1848, Emancipation Garden offers a
quiet respite during a walking tour. It contains a
replica of the Liberty Bell. The US Virgin Islands
Legislature building is the political center of the US
territory and you can sit in on government sessions.
Government House is the administrative headquarters for
the US Virgin Islands. You can visit the lower two floor
during the week. The Grand hotel built in 1837 has a
visitor center and a restaurant. The was closed as a
hotel in 1975 and now contains offices. 99 steps was a
set of steps up a hill leading to the summit of
Government Hill. From there, you can visit Crown House,
St Thomas Reformed Church and St Thomas Synagogue.
Back in Charlotte Amalie, you can visit the Camille
Pisaro Building which houses some paintings by French
Impressionist painter Jacob Pizarro who was actually a
Spanish Jew. He worked at a store on Main street in the
1830's. Market Square was the largest slave trading
market prior to 1848 when emancipation occurred. Now
it's an open air, fruit and vegetable market. The
Waterfront also known as Kyst Vejen, is one of the most
scenic harbors in the West Indies. Don't forget to buy a
fresh coconut while you're there.
The highest point in Charlotte Amalie is atop the 700
foot Flag Hill where tourists can ride the Paradise Sky
Tram for great views of Charlotte Amalie and the St
Thomas Harbor, and even do some hiking. You can eat at
the restaurant and enjoy the entertaining bird shows
which include colorful, smart Parrots and Macaws.
