The US Virgin Islands and
British Virgin Islands share a 400 year history,
although the islands were the property of native indians
and other European nations at different points in time.
The BVI as they're called are more laid back and
friendly than the USVI and they're generally suited to
those not looking for excitement during their
Virgin Island vacation.
The British Virgin Islands offer some of the most
interesting beaches and views of the Virgin Islands. You
can visit via the ferries leaving the harbor on the west
side of St John or from
St Thomas.
There are over 40 islands
in the BVI chain, with four major islands that most
people visit: Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and
Anegada. Tortola is the most populace island with its
capital city of Road Town which hosts many banks and a
cruise ship port.
The British Virgin Islands, once a
haven for pirates because of the numerous coves and
bays, are a favorite destination for yachts and other
sailing
vessels where the views are beautiful. The international
airport is located on Beef Island where you can also go
shelling. There is a small number of shops here and you
can take ferries to some of the other local islands.
There's plenty of outdoor
activities in the British Virgin Islands including
sailing, parasailing,
snorkeling,
kayaking, fishing, scuba diving and hiking. Don't expect
to play much golf here. This is where you get away from
it all. However, there are some great restaurants equal
in quality to
St Thomas restaurants.
Virgin Gorda offers excellent
snorkeling
and swimming with crystal clear shallow water beaches
and rock formations that keep it interesting. The Baths
as they're known are huge granite boulders, probably
spewed up by volcanic activity long ago. Another great
place to visit is Sage Mountain National Park which has
a small tropical rainforest. Its full of walking and
hiking trails and you can also find horseback riding at
Shadow's Ranch.
Anegada is where you'll
see pink flamingos and go bone fishing. There's no
shortage of shrimp and lobster on the menus of
restaurants in Virgin Gorda. Check out the Rock Cafe on
Tower Road and dine among the boulders or try out some
Conch at the Top of The Baths restaurant.
The resorts in the
British Virgin Islands are well spaced out, particularly
those on the small outer islands. If you're looking for
seclusion yet still not roughing it, try the lodgings on
Peter Island, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. They're small
and intimate and you'll get to know all the others
staying there.
