  Virgin Island Wildlife

The US Virgin Islands are rich with bird and marine wildlife and you can explore them on your own or via ecotours operated by local tour operators with trips to USVI Parks. There are numerous spots to watch birds and see tropical fish. The Virgin Islands National Park in St John is a natural habitat preservation area covering two thirds of the island. Over a million visitors come to the island, mostly because of its unspoiled, undeveloped beauty and the wildlife. The visitor's center at Mongoose Junction is the Park's visitor center. Here you can get directions for a hiking and 4 wheeling tours.

There are more 200 birds species visible in the Virgin Islands, many of them stopping by on their migratory flights south and north. There are 30 species of tropical birds including the Bananaquit which is the official bird of the Virgin Islands. They are so small they can fit in your hand. You'll also see hummingbirds and smooth billed ani in the National Park. Herons and Pelicans live in the USVI too. Pelicans dive into the water to catch fish and Herons walk the shores to catch theirs. Three types of herons you'll see are the West Indian Green Heron, Little Blue Heron and the Great Blue Heron. St John is a wonderful place with very limited residential real estate.

Animals on islands include donkeys, Iguanas, goats, and mongooses. Mongooses were introduced in the islands to control rats and they now proliferate in St John. The name of the popular place known as Mongoose junction is named for these local inhabitants.
