The warm tropical weather is perfect for the growth of
some of the most beautiful flowers, plants and trees
you'll see anywhere in the Caribbean Islands.
Some unusual trees you'll see are the Bay Rum trees
whose fragrance is often used in men's aftershave
products. The only indigenous palm tree to the islands
is the Broom Palm. Coconut Palms are found all over the
island and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The
Calabash Tree produce large gourd shaped fruit which
locals use to make bowls and even musical instruments.
The Flamboyant Tree yields bright red and orange blooms
and the Ginger Thomas which grows on hillsides produces
yellow blossoms. The lime tree produces the common lime
fruit used in island drinks and desserts. The Manchineel
tree contains a poisonous red fruits and the trees sap
is very toxic. The turpentine tree is a reddish colored
tree whose bark peels and because of their termite
resistance, they were once grown as natural fence posts.
Termites ate away any other wooden posts used for
fences.
Mahogany trees grow here as well and this hardwood is
used by locals for their woodworking products. It has
many natural characteristics such as it's rot and insect
resistance that make it a highly sought type of wood for
furniture and decks.
Plants and flowers that grow here include the Allamanda,
a lush green plant that grows among vines and hedges,
and which has poisonous sap. Despite this, it is
frequently used in landscaping and gardens. The
Bougainvillea ranges in color from red to orange and
white. The plant itself can become huge and is
frequently used in landscaping and flower gardens. The
Bird of Paradise is an exotic flower that does grow in
very moist areas of the islands, is most often found in
home gardens. Another popular flower is the Hibiscus
which has flowers in many different colors. The
Anthurium is a waxy, hart shaped flower that can come in
many shades of pink, white or red. You can buy these as
cut flowers at roadside stalls. The cactus-like Night
Blooming Cereus blooms during the night and produces a
sweet aroma. The plant has large petals which become
tasty fruits after they close in the morning. One more
common Caribbean flower is the Oleander which locals
plant next to their fragile plants to keep goats and
donkeys away. The sap is poisonous to animals.
